Andy Duncan
Edinburgh, Utrecht, d.21.July.2022,
cancer
Andy Duncan was a friend of mine. I feel proud and privileged to
know this. A man of culture, Andy was a student of life, a bike
messenger and full of life enough to scale mountains while fighting
the sickness that eventually sent him onto the next chapter. It
never fails to bring a smile to my face remembering Andy wanting to
listen our bunch from Helsinki speak Finnish. As ”it’s the only
language here that’s completely foreign to me”. Godspeed my friend
❤️ - Paavo Kuukasjärvi
Andy what to even say? When I saw you in Lausanne some years ago we
spent time together chatting and reminiscing and essentially saying
goodbye as at that time you were also seemingly facing a somewhat
imminent passing. I’m so grateful for all the extra years we had
with you and you had in this crazy world. I’m grateful you found
love again and that you got to climb many additional Munro’s. I love
you and will hold you in my heart forever. I wish you a peaceful
passing. You will never be forgotten. 💜💞💖 - Leah Hollinsworth
Hamish McBastard . You stopped 13 of us in our tracks ! Who’s this
guy fae Scotland and not from Scotland . He’s Dutch !? Lets go find
this guy! What’s his race number , find his bike , then find this
guy and find out why he’s called Hamish McBastard and If he’s
Actually Scottish !! CMWCC Zurich 99. We found you Andy and since
then we’ve been in awe of your calm thoughtful intelligence( to be
fair you were right auld even by my standards with ten year up the
road fae me) but your measured manner was set in an intellectual
mind. Your calm resonance in the madness of a Dublin ECMC was
memorable ,and reassured me that you were a fitting Elected
Messenger President. Your conquest of Scotlands mountains, whilst
battling cancer , and your ongoing survival whilst writing your
blogs has been inspirational . I hope your days ahead fill your
heart , and I’m sorry I never got to know you better . Scrabble on
the other side , love to Shona ❤️ - Juan Pacifico Ramirez
Have a safe ride to the other side brave soul Andy Duncan ♤ may you
be blessed and welcomed by the other bike messenger fellows - Astrid

Dear Andy, It was nice to have known you. We've only been colleagues
for a few years as bicycle courier in Utrecht, but you were
definitely my favorite colleague. I remember well that you addressed
me in Utrecht at Het Wed because you also wanted to become a courier
and that you later gave Mark and I a mini course in wheel suits in
my backyard. It was always nice to drop into your workplace during
or after a day of courier and see how handy you repaired all those
bikes. Thank you for including us in your process and on your tours
of beautiful Scotland over the past few years. Lots of strength for
Shona too. Unfortunately, I know how big and black the hole is when
you lose your loved one....... Enjoy your last period with your
loved ones around you 💕.- Mieke Baldé
Huge love for you. You are a lesson in grace. Thank you for
everything you do. - Rebecca Reilly

living eulogy ? Let's party - Julian Yogi Somosi
Thank you for all the wise words among the Lego on my FB feed good
sir! They will be truly missed. My boy Mr Zane (my big ol'
Rottweiler), will be waiting to greet you. He's a bit flatulent, but
has a massive heart and will stick by your side. 🙂 - Austin Peter

Andy is my hero. Years ago, he was given a couple years to live, and
he just stuck it out for a decade. What a man! And he will continue
to live with us in our journeys. Once a bike messenger, always a
bike messenger. Ride in peace, Andy - Kole Kerr

Dear sweet Andy Duncan . I will never forget you. Thank you for all
those beautiful meetings. Have a safe trip...- Paula Meijer
I have a lot of books by messengers and about messengers. My
favourite ones are by messengers and this book of philosophy by Andy
Duncan is one of the best. I read it often because Andy makes me
think and he inspires me. I tired to limit this post to 4 pics but I
failed because it’s so difficult to limit Andy’s wonderful
observations and philosophy. I’m so grateful to have Andy in my life
and so grateful he will always remain a part of my life. - Joe
Hendry
I have no words.. but you have a place in my heart and beautiful
memories ❤️❤️❤️️ - Gaël Vivianne Keizer
Remembering former IFBMA President Andy Duncan who passed away
yesterday after a long battle with cancer. Andy was a long time
messenger, former owner of bike shop Cycleworks Utrecht and former
co-owner of a very successful bike messenger co-op in Utrecht.
Andy was a cyclist, a writer, a philosopher, a leader and an
inspiration but most of all he was a friend. I’m so thankful I was
able to talk to Andy and let him know how much he means to me. I
knew this day was coming but it didn’t make it much easier.
Andy Duncan is one of my biggest inspirations. President of the
IFBMA. Cyclist, messenger, entrepreneur. Athlete. Builder of bridges
between people. Philosopher. Advocate. One of the smartest people I
have been fortunate to meet. I love this piece because it captures a
side of Andy I admire so much. His calm but determined actions to
move forward and make sense of this world at the same time. Andy is
a man who will exceed your expectations and embed memories that will
inspire you for the rest of your life. - Joe Hendry
I love you Andy! You have been such an inspiration to me and I know
you were to Wayne too. I am so lucky to know you both and benefit
from your insight and experience. And I know you will continue to
inspire me as I carry and share your influence throughout the rest
of my life here. - Joe Hendry

Dear Friends, Andy died yesterday at home
with Shona. We are humbled by the astonishing efforts made by the
care teams, doctors and friends whose work, attendance and love
allowed him his wish to spend his final days at home. Andy was
delighted to become Opa to his and Shona’s lovely grandchilden, who
provided lots of joy. All of you on this community and others, have
provided immeasurable support for him during his illness. Andy’s
friends in the cycle messenger community in the Netherlands and
around the world, and all the people he met in the mountains, have
been a source of inspiration to him in his life and a great source
of comfort and help during his illness. We are immensely
grateful for all the visits from old and new friends who were able
to visit and provide comfort and entertainment.
Thank you, Shona and family, Colin and family.
RIP The love of my life… 🚴🏻♂️🌈🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🕊💔
I am going to have to set the legacy setting on Andy Duncan’s phone.
I’m giving it one more day. The reason for this is I am actually
reluctant to let go of the messenger community and all the friends
from all corners of his life. He filled me with such wonderful
stories that I will miss this terribly. Feeling joined it’s hard to
cut that off. I have found a great deal of love and comfort in this.
So I ask anyone to send a friend request if they so wish as one day
I may travel to seek some of you out to share some memories and of
course promote his book, the other love of his life and which he
felt was his greatest achievement ! Sharing his love of the
landscapes of the Scottish mountains, reflections and philosophy..☺️
From the bottom of my heart & also from Colin Duncan his
brother, thank you all for the wonderful heart warming wishes from
friends, family & really everyone connected, even if briefly.
“ once you put your foot in the pedal, hear that click as your foot
connects, push down .. then you’re free..” 🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🌈
Love and peace to all Shona 🚴🏻♂️🌈🕊❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
