Courier Couture Delivers

Messengers Pedal Loop's Mean Streets Cloaked in Attitude

by Chris Walker.

Chicago Tribune, March 16, 1995

Scott, a Loop bicycle courier, says he began wearing his outrageousprotective clothing after he went through a BMW windshield-from the outsidein. Now recovered, he again delivers business documents and other hardcopy for KDR Messenger Service, and carries a card that bills him as "messengerfor the future."

There are more than 50 messenger services in Chicago, and more thana few styles of dress among them. Some have dress codes or uniforms, whichvary from the basic brown of Chicago Messenger Service to the bumblebeetights buzzing the city for Deadline or the snappy tie and yellow shirtworn by Arrow riders.

Other firms such as On the Fly, Velocity and Quicksilver Messenger Serviceallow more liberty, which tends to bring out a baggy, torn grunge style. But regardless of the dress code, or lack thereof, there's definitely anattitude here.
