A 64-year-old Manhattan woman was critically injured yesterday whenshe was struck by a bicycle messenger in the middle of the block on a busyManhattan thoroughfare, police said.
The victim, Harrietta Peterka, was listed in extremely critical conditionlast night at Bellevue Hospital, said Det. Joseph Pentangelo, a policespokesman.
Pentangelo said the messenger, Suna Hollan, 35, of South Fourth Street,in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged withobstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest. He saidshe was charged after she refused to cooperate with police officers investigatingthe accident and gave them a false identification. The charges were notrelated to Hollan's operation of the bicycle, Pentangelo said.
The accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. on Madison Avenue between 30th and31st Streets. Pentangelo said witnesses gave conflicting accounts of theaccident - some said Peterka was struck after stepping out of a cab whileothers said she was walking across the street. He said the bike messengerwas traveling north on Madison Avenue when she collided with with Peterka.
