La
Carrera Recommences the Cycle
|

Torontoist, October 26, 2006
For the past four years, La
Carrera has been busy turning itself into a Harbord Village
institution. Everyone recognizes the bright orange bike shop across
from Central Tech and next to The Original Patty Deluxe. Torontoist
admits we were a bit dismayed when we saw the "We're Moving" in their
window, but delighted when we realised they were just moving down the
road (over near Harbord and Robert) to a roomier new location.
To celebrate their new digs, La Carrera is having probably the only
non-Hallowe'en-related party this Saturday night. Look for DJ sets from
Senor Vishal, Captain Eric and A Man Called Warwick. But the real
highlight of the evening is Peter Sutherland, a New York City-based
visual artist who will be displaying his photographs and screening his
film Pedal, which is about New York bicycle messengers. If you want to
check out the film, it sceens at 6:00pm on Saturday at La Carrera's new
location: 106 Harbord. The party follows.
Torontoist caught up with Nadir Olivet, La Carrera's founder. After
spending 11 years working as a bicycle messenger in various cities in
North America and Europe, Olivet opened La Carrera in 2002 as a means
of obtaining part-time employment. With the new location, La Carrera
now has more space and more merchandise. Olivet was excited to tell us
about some of the new hiphop clothing designers that are going to be
dealing exclusively with his store. Part of the philosophy behind the
store is to merge cyclist and messenger culture with hiphop culture.
Another initiative is sponsoring a German cyclist who is planning to
compete in the next Olympics. La Carrera is that rare and lovely
mixture of friendly neighbourhood establishment and hipster ambition
that Torontoist so enjoys to see. Keep cycling!
