McLeod is “Chaired”
Toronto Star, August 25, 1934
Talk about enthusiasm…the reception the Canadian National Telegraph
messenger boys gave Bob McLeod, their pal who went over to England and
won the ten mile British Empire championship was a minute of the wild
reception the Varsity crowd gave the Varsity Grads the year they won
the Olympic title.
There were only about 20 of the boys but they sounded like ten score.
They bried McLeod in ticker tape and confetti and then carried
him uptown on a “throne” built up from a chair and a ladder . They made
the whole downtown section aware that the British Empire team was home.
Popular kid is this McLeod and a nice lad, personally. He had to have
gimp to get where he is today in sport and the same determination and
enthusiasm will get him somewhere in later life.
He is not likely to spoil under adulation.
