Crompton Sets Pace in the 1,000 Metres Olympic Time Trial

Toronto Star, June 26, 1936

George Crompton (a telegraph bike messenger) flashed across the wire with the best time at Exhibition last night in the 1,000 metres Olympic time trial, which opened a three-day carnival of amateur cycling.

George hit the distance, considered the toughest of all bike tests, in 1:16 4-5. The old record was 1:18 1-5 held by (fellow telegraph bike messenger) Bob McLeod, who finished second last night in 1:17 1-5.

Doug Peace, third placer also broke the record with a 1:18 mark. McLeod and Peace are club-mates of Crompton’s, all three being members of the Maple Leaf Wheelman.
