George Crompton (a telegraph bike
messenger) flashed across the wire with the best time at
Exhibition last night in the 1,000 metres Olympic time trial, which
opened a three-day carnival of amateur cycling.
George hit the distance, considered the toughest of all bike tests, in
1:16 4-5. The old record was 1:18 1-5 held by (fellow telegraph bike messenger)
Bob McLeod, who finished second last night in 1:17 1-5.
Doug Peace, third placer also broke the record with a 1:18 mark. McLeod
and Peace are club-mates of Crompton’s, all three being members of the
Maple Leaf Wheelman.
