Eleven Children Die Beneath Auto Wheels
Messenger - George
Griffin, Killed
Toronto Star, June 9, 1927
The automobile menace and the need for better protection for the youth
of Toronto is increasing. Last evening the number of youths and
children killed by automobiles since the first of the year reached 11
when George Griffin, aged 19, 1209 Bloor Street West, had his young
life snuffed out by the crushing wheels of a motor car.
This is the second child death from automobiles within three days.
Within a few minutes of Griffin’s death, Eddie Latremouille, aged 7,
331 Kennedy Road was seriously injured while crossing the roadway in
front of his suburban home. Daily the bodies of Toronto children are
being marred for life by the automobile traffic.
Young Griffin was messenger boy delivering packages for a Bloor Street
storekeeper. He had delivered his parcel last evening and was just
going back for another errand when Thomas Freme’s automobile struck the
bicycle in some manner and threw the boy to the ground. He was picked
up with a fractured skull and rushed to the hospital but it was too
late. He was dead.
