Eric Baker was a legendary New York City bike messenger and race organizer. He was famous all over the world after appearing in both "Red light Go" and "Pedal." Eric was one of the people who put on New York's famous Halloween Alleycat Race. Eric is known for planning, organizing and designing the Halloween Alleycat with a live traffic course in the shape of a pentagram.

RIP. Eric Baker died this weekend. Most of us knew him as Evil E, Evil or just plain E. A lot of the new kids know him from the messenger who put on the Halloween race while locked up, in the film “Red Light Go” or the homeless messenger in “Pedal”. A lot of us knew him as Eric. About 7 years ago he started asking me to stop calling him “evil”. “I’m not actually evil so I think I’ll drop the evil and just go by “E”, he said to me.

A lot of us worried about Eric. Especially after he was not able to messenger anymore. Honestly E didn’t know how to do anything else. He constantly had his demons chasing him. Unfortunately they would actually catch him; (Eric survived a lot of things, homeless, being shot in the head by police, losing a child and much more. Now he has lost his life. We are going to miss you Eric Baker. @cyclehawk, @mikedeelives, @continuumcycles, @bloger.amy, @hodaridepalm, @mightychin, - cccyclery

Eric's obituary:

Eric was born in California to parents Maryanne and Gerald Lon Baker. He was the oldest of three to his loving siblings, his brother Django and sister Holly. Eric moved to Chicago, Illinois, in which his parents spent the majority of his teen years. He moved to New York City in 1987 where he later met Rebecca with whom he had children Amanda, Maryanne, Eric and step-daughter Aislynn. Eric met Stephanie in the early 2000’s with whom he had a son Eric “Gozzie” Baker.

Eric endured many battles in life and managed to keep that beautiful smile of his. He had a heart of gold. He could not see a person or animal in need. He would do everything in his power to help. He was one of a kind…a loving, genuine, pure soul.

Today I’m finding solace watching “Pedal”, one of the best documentaries about bike messengers after hearing of Eric Baker’s passing. He is featured prominently in this. It also has Steve the Greek who passed away not long ago.  Eric was one of those messengers who I never met but became very familiar with because of his influence on the community. This has been as especially tough year for many of the messengers who have influenced me in different ways. Jen Zen in San Francisco, Dirty Curty in Toronto, Mike Hansford and Eric in New York. And it’s not just veterans and legends. Pablo Avendano’s death in Philadelphia will haunt me for years. So I’m going to watch Pedal and Red Light Go and Tribe and Beasts of Burden and others. Hopefully sometime in the next year I can take a cue from Buffalo Bill and write about some of my messenger heroes and influences who are still very much with us. - Joe Hendry
