Crackdown Likely on Bicycle Messengers

Channel 5, Boston, May 13, 1998

There could be a crackdown on bicycle messengers who speed through thestreets and sidewalks of downtown Boston.

The City Council's Public Safety Committee holds a hearing later todayon a proposal to make bike couriers more accountable.

The panel will receive written testimony from former Boston School Committeemember William Spring. He's still recovering from serious injuries sufferedwhen a courier ran into him last fall on Commonwealth Avenue.

In the future, city officials may require courier services to carryinsurance on each of its messengers.

The plan would also require easily identifiable license plates and largearmbands. And it would give the Boston police commissioner power to revokeor suspend courier licenses.
