Bike couriers
flock to area for championship event
Houston Chronicle, December 11, 2002

Nearly 300 bicycle couriers from across the country will compete for bragging
rights this weekend at the North American Cycle Courier Championships in
Houston.
The fifth-annual event, being held in the Bayou City for the first time,
is designed to test participants' skills in a variety of categories such
as cargo, routing, speed and accuracy. A series of qualifying events leads
up to a final race Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
"The final simulates a typical business day with couriers required to make
stops at eight checkpoints on the course," said Ross Gould, spokesman for
the Houston Bicycle Couriers Association, which is organizing the event.
"The courier who delivers the most packages, including parcels, large boxes
and shipping tubes, in the shortest amount of time wins."
The competition is serious stuff -- think of it as the Tour de France of
the bicycle courier world -- with yearlong bragging rights on the line.
"It's all about being the best courier in North America," Gould said. "There
are no cash prizes or major awards, simply the right to claim you're the
best."
The competition is being staged in Houston's warehouse district, near downtown.
